Certificate Course In Public Health Nursing (CPHN)


SIHFW under NRHM commenced CPHN course, for a batch of 30 students, from the FY 2011-12 as per the Government Order No: Health and Family Welfare/104/ FPE/2011, Bangalore, dated: 30/07/2011. This course was formulated by combining 2 courses such as condensed general nursing and DPHN (DNEA). The syllabus has been developed by conducting workshop by involving the principal of Jr. H.A. female (ANM) TC, Sr. H.A. female (LHV) TC, Joint Director, Deputy Directors of SIHFW and DHS.

This is a Career Progression course for LHVs. The course has been designed for 18 months (split in 3 semesters). This course was started by the approval of government of Karnataka & budget under NRHM fund. The certificate course of PHN is a diploma course provided for Lady Health visitors (senior PCHO). The candidates are deputed from various districts across Karnataka state. 

The total duration of the course is one and half year. (18 months- 3 semesters). 

The course comprises of theory and practical component. 

Candidates admitted to the course will get an opportunity to appear for the examination in     3 attempts including the year of admission. 

The medium of instruction and examination is in English 

Course Design:

The entire course has been divided into 3 semesters. 

1.Internal assessment: (out of 25 marks) includes, 

  • Attendance during theory, clinical and field posting. 

  • Assignments in each subject. 

  • 3 class test and preparatory examination in each subject in each semester. 

  • Clinical assignment, care plan presentation. (Out of 50 marks). 

2.Theory component: (out of 75 marks) includes, 

  • Semester end theory examination. 

3.Practical component: (out of 50 marks) includes, 

  • Semester end practical examination and viva. 

  • CFT project work. 

  • SFT project work. 


CPHN course was started in the year 2011 and has successfully trained 193 candidates in 7 batches. All those who availed this training are working in the department at different capacities as, 

  • District Nursing Officer at District Health Office 

  • District Nursing Officer at HFWTC / District Training centres 

  • In-charge Principal at ANM training Centre

  • Tutor at ANM training Centre 

  • Senior Primary Health Care Officer 

  • Primary Health Care Officer
